Doujin soft, 同人ソフト short for "software", also sometimes called doujin games 同人ゲーム, are video games created by Japanese hobbyists or hobbyist groups (referred to as circles), more for fun than for profit; essentially, the Japanese equivalent of fangames. Most of them are based on pre-existing material, but some are entirely original creations. They are almost always exclusive to the PC, but a few notable exceptions also exist for the Dreamcast, because of its very weak copy protection.
Doujin soft are typically available in "demo" or "trial" (体験版) form for free on the internet, with full versions available for purchase. One game, French-Bread's brawler Ragnarok Battle Offline, a homage/spoof of the MMORPG Ragnarok Online so impressed Gravity Corp. (the original game's designers) that it has been given an official release outside of Japan.
Like fangames, doujin soft frequently use characters from existing games, anime, or manga. These unauthorized uses of characters are generally ignored and accepted by the copyright holders, and are seen as encouraging a greater fan community. This is quite different from the West where high-profile fangames are regularly shut down by cease-and-desist orders. There are also many d?jin soft titles which are completely original, or feature only vague allusions to other series.
While most doujin soft sales occur at anime and video game or anime conventions (such as Comiket), there is a growing number of specialized internet sites that sell them. Some titles sell well enough that their creators can make a full-time job out of their "amateur hobby". One particular circle, TYPE-MOON, has since become a commercial videogame developer and anime studio.
1. UnRAR the file
2. Go into Control Panel
3. Go to Regional Setting and Language Options
4. Click the Install Languages tab
5. Check Install Eastern Language Pack
6. Click OK
7. When it asks for the disk, or the file's location, navigate to the UnRAR'd folder. The rest will work itself out.
After that you must do this:
Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options -> Advanced -> Select a language to match the language version of the non-Unicode programs you want to use: Japanese
And if the fighting game still doesn't work, try this:
1. Make sure that the path to the executable has no spaces.
2. Rename the executable and kgt file to something that's in English.

This is the sequal to Suguri. Instead of being a side scrolling shoot 'em up game, it is a fighting game, with a difference. You fly around as different characters, shooting bullets at each other. The action is really fast sometimes, with a lot of things going on in the screen. The graphics are really nice, as are the characters and the attacks you can pull off. This is a really great game, and if you are a fan of fighting and shoot 'em up games, this is a game forged in heaven.

In this game you can play as 3 different characters from the anime AIR. The whole objective is to go around the stages, collecting crows, and other animals, whilst avoiding enemies such as cats. You must then bring the crows, or whatever you have collected back to the doors that say EXIT. Once you have cleared the stage of all animals that you have collected, you may proceed to the next. This game also has a time attack mode, to add replay value. Very original and unique game, and the physics are really sweet.

This is a really fun game that just came out at Comiket 70. It is a side scrolling action adventure game, where you play the role as 2 girls armed with guns. DiadraEmpty is a beautiful shooting game and is very original. The particle effects are great, so are the sprites and the general layout of the game. You must fly around what is basically an arena, taking out various enemies. They get harder as teh stage goes on, and the game gets very challenging. This is an adventure gaming, featuring the characters from Squaresoft's Threads of Fate RPG for the PSX. It is one or 2 player, and is really fun to play. The 2D sprites merged with the 3D background works really well, and the level design is brilliant. You get to choose from either 2 characters at the start, both with different attacks. This is one of my favourite Doujin Soft games. You must kill as many enemies as you possibly can on each stage. There are loads and loads of enemies that come at you at once, which makes it quite a hard game. There are also a variety of characters to choose from, as well as stages. If you like cute graphics, mixed with tons of enemies and fighting, then definetly get this. Notes:
You can hold down the Attack button for a charged smash. I don't see any point to charging the Stun, as it seems to stun even bosses without charging. However, you can still use the Stun while charging an attack to block any incoming shots. If you appear to be lost somewhere amongst the swarm (it can happen), you can hit the Marker button to show the player indicator again for a few seconds. It appears to be up to 6 Players, but only the last two are accessable via keyboard (i.e.: 3 Gamepads makes the Keyboard players 4 & 5). The health system in this game has me completely stumped. Sometimes enemies can cheap-mob you for 10+ hits without killing you, but at other times you seem far more fragile. All I know is it has something to do with the food items you collect from enemies. Occasionally, tougher characters wander on to the field. While they could all be classed as bosses, the music will sometimes change as long as a certain boss is on the screen (not the same one each time). I can't figure out how you're supposed to unlock the extra characters, but I have somehow managed to get one of the bosses (green haired boss, Mana Tsukuyomi). By the way, watch out for the blonde ponytailed boss - those purple firebolts of her's will knock you into last week if you don't avoid them...
Z = Control Anita: the player primarily controls Anita (the youngest sister). When she runs into an enemy, she automatically attacks, but does little damage. Pressing her button allows her to travel farther from the other two sisters and do more damage, but also activates a circular timer that envelopes Anita. When the timer runs out, she and the other two sisters will reunite, and the timer will recharge; Anita cannot detach again until the timer recharges. Anita's attacks do not use up paper ammo.
X = Control Michelle: Michelle's attacks vary in strength depending on whether Anita is attached to the group or not. When Anita is attached, Michelle will fire a single arrow; when Anita is detached, Michelle will fire a volley of arrows. Michelle's single arrow uses up 5 pieces of paper, while her volley uses considerably more.
C = Control Maggie: Similar to Michelle, Maggie's attacks vary depending on whether Anita is separated from the group. When attached, Maggie will create a paper wall; when detached, Maggie will summon a paper animal to aid Anita, repeated pressing of the button (up to three times) creates an increasingly larger animal. Maggie's attacks use up the bulk of the paper ammunition depending on the size of the creature created; when creating the wall, after it falls, all papers will return to the inventory save any that have been destroyed by enemy fire.

ElePaper Action is a dojin soft game for Microsoft Windows created by Easy Game Station based on the anime series R.O.D: the TV, with elements from other video games and anime such as Rolling Thunder and Cromartie High School. The title is a spoof of the 1983 Taito game Elevator Action, though the two games bear no similarities in gameplay, except for the bonus game during the credits. The game is a one-player only side-scroller with elements similar to both Metal Slug and Final Fight, as well as some RPGs such as Valkyrie Profile and even shooters such as Gradius. The fighting is great, the characters are great, and the stages are really nice. This is a well created fighting game, and is recommended to any fan of Dojin Soft. This package comes with a Sprite Editor (so you can edit the appearance of characters), and also a seperate program to window the game, (d3dwindower).

Ether Vapor is an amazing STG that is easily commercial quality. The graphics are stunning, as is the gameplay and music. The game switches between vertical and horizontal play at various points which makes it very interesting. There are points where missiles will chase after you and you must lock on to them to destroy them. These parts of the game not only look fantastic, but are pretty fun to engage in. This game also comes with wallpapers and the soundtrack. Even if you don't like STG's then you should download this anyway. If you are an STG fan, welcome to heaven.

Fatal Fake is a 3d doujin fighting game for the PC featuring all the servants from Fate/Stay Night. Fatal Fake is another doujin fighting game featuring characters from TYPE-MOON's popular visual novel. This version is graphically superior than the rest of it's cousins, partly due to the use of cel-shading process to render the fighters.
The camera view changes and rotates automatically so that the player can get the best view of the action unfolding on screen. There doesn't seem to be a playing manual or list of moves to be found anywhere, although arcade veterans should be able to figure them out after a few practice sessions.

This is an old game that was released quite a while ago. None the less, it is still an awesome game. Very fast gameplay, with great character drawings, as well as stages. There are lots of different combo's to pull off too. This game is actually classed as an adult game, because it contains some hentai scenes (although I actually can't find any myself). A great game for anyone who is a fan of fighting games.

This game reminds me of Metal Slug. You play as a nun called Marilu, who loves to blow stuff up. You can pilot a Mech, shoot rocket launchers and more. Probably the best Dojin Soft fighter of all time. From the makers of Touhou and Eternal Fighter Zero, comes Immaterial and Missing Power. This is a fighting game, with a very heavy focus on projectiles. The action is awesome, and the attacks are even better. The characters are very well done, as are the levels. This game is just incredible, get it right now.

Story
While making preparations for the feast three days away, Reimu is distracted by a strange powerful mist that is covering Gensokyo. She and many other inhabitants of Gensokyo (such as Alice and Patchouli) go to investigate.
Suika Ibuki is an oni. Although legends say all the oni are gone, Suika has decided to reunite the humans and oni by attracting them through partying. Using her special ability to spread across the land, she causes the humans and youkai to have feasts and parties. The more drunk she gets, the stronger she becomes, and she carries a gourd treasured by the oni, which never empties of sake.

In this game, you must defeat boss after boss, by dodging bullets and firing back with your own. This game is sort of like a Beat 'em Up. This game is also extremely hard, with some insane bullet patterns. You need to collect power ups in order to "Level Up" during battles, to gain more HP so you can win. This really is a fantastic game, any fan of STG games should get this.

Magical Hop is a cute platformer. You play as a girl who is able to fly, and you basically have tou battle your way to the end of every level. The game has a nice collection of enemies and characters, and I just can't help but love the graphics on this game. If you are in to platformers, you will like this a lot.

Maotan has really nice cel shaded style graphics, which immediatly draw you in (well it did to me anyway). You are equipped with a broom, which you attack and sweep up with. Yes I did say sweep up, because when you kill enemies you have to sweep them up to finally eliminate them, and also gain powerups. The stages look very nice, and the game canm get quite difficult in places. Very good.

MegaMari is a great game, yet again involving you playing as Marisa from the Touhou Series. At the start, you choose a character (this is the character's episode that you will play, you will still play as Marisa). You can also switch forms by pressing A. This game is surprisingly hard, and fires bullets at you much like the Touhou Series. Great game, worth the download.
